Homer Price, chapters 5 and 6.

Chapter 5:  Nothing New Under the Sun (Hardly).
There is not too much happening in Centerburg with the fair being over and the election nearly a month away.    A "Rip Van Winkle-ish"stranger comes to town with a musical mousetrap contraption built onto his car.  There is a lot of suspicion!
Lessons from this chapter:
*Washington Irving and Rip Van Winkle
*Political parties (it is almost election time)
*Making good appearances

Chapter 6:  Wheels of Progress.
The rich lady from the donut chapter is back again but this time she wants to make a "cookie-cutter" subdivision in Centerburg.  She wants the entire neighborhood to be exactly alike right down to the shrubs.  The neighborhood is finished and all of Centerburg turns out for the "One Hundred and Fifty Years of Centerburg Progress Week" celebration.
Lessons we covered:
*Women's suffrage-A brief introduction. Wikipedia, A timeline.
*Cookie-cutter neighborhood (How would you like the neighborhood?  Would you want to be a cookie-cutter kid?)
*Habitat for Humanity and HUD. A link.
We really enjoyed the study of Homer Price.  My kids were anxious to get back to our studies of ancient civilizations so we probably went through the last few chapters a little fast but Rome was calling so it was time to go.  That is another one of the beauties of homeschooling, when you have an interest in something you are free to take it.
