Science or snack?

We are currently working on a human anatomy course using Apologia's Young Explorer Series.  We are working on the lesson on cells.  We did the edible cell project which was fun, educational, and pretty yummy all at the same time.  My kids are really hands on learners so this turned out to be a great way to learn the different parts of a cell, but please do not ask me to name them.

Basically, you make lemon Jello and then pick out various different candies to act as the different types of organelles in a cell.  For example, we used a Hershey's Kiss for the nucleus.  Other organelles were made from Skittles, gummy fruits, M&Ms, and you get the idea.  The cell parts are the cytoplasm, mitochondria, lysosomes, Golgi body, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, centrioles, and the nucleus.

Once you have created your cell, you get to eat it!  Here are a few pictures prior to the eating of the cells and some of the supplies that we used.

In this photo, they are cutting out a little of the Jello so they can insert their organelles.

As above.

After everything was added, they turned the bowl upside down on a plate to release their cells.

They do look a little gross.

A close up.
Pretty neat!
