So as you know, we recently brought home 2 guinea pigs. No problem! Our last guinea pigs lived to be more than 6 years old, and they were NEVER a problem. But, do you see this cute little face below? This guinea pig has the cutest face but the worst personality I have EVER seen in a guinea pig.

I AM TROUBLE! |
I really believe that he is part Tasmanian devil! He uses the bathroom in the food bowl, he bites to the point of drawing blood, he squeals for no apparent reason, and he chases the other poor little guinea pig all day and all night. The cage is complete chaos! The bedding is mostly outside of the cage because of this Tasmanian guinea pig. Once he starts to chase the other guinea pig, it just shoots out of the cage and ends up everywhere.
Earlier today, we actually went back to the store and had a conversation with the "Professionals" and they said they have never heard of a guinea pig acting like this. They said "He is unique." Great! Just my luck to get a "Unique" guinea pig. I wanted a normal guinea pig. They said we could bring him back and get another but of course, C12 is not interested in this idea. She likes his Uniqueness.
Um, Tracey.. did you happen to check to be certain they are both boys? We had someone give us a girlie and our normally sweet docile piggie went NUTS. Chased, screamed, carried on like you wouldn't believe. Turned out that the "girlie" we'd been given was all boy. It was so annoying because we had two guinea pigs who couldn't be together!!
ReplyDeleteThen again we've never had 2 boys before because as we understood it some male guinea pigs can be very territorial. Which may be more what you have, thus his weeing in the food bowl. He's marking it as HIS bowl. If you put them in different cages I wonder if your Wild Pig would become more Normal. ;) Have you ever checked out the Guine Pig forums over on Guinea Pig Cages {dot} com.
Beforwarned, there is HEAPS of awesome advice and LOTS of knowledgeable advice.. but if you mention using a store bought cage of purchasing your piggies from a pet shop they'll lecture you. I always avoid the specifics and get right to business.. You know.. something like, "Dude my pig is acting like a Tasmanian Devil, what's the deal?" ;)
Kendra, I made sure that we came home with 2 males. He is starting to calm down a bit. I think he is just being territorial. There are 2 food bowls so I hope he will just pee in his bowl from now on. I will look into the forums. Thanks!
