Atomic motion

Easy way to understand atomic motion.

Experiment from Apologia General Science.

What you need:
~2 clear jars or glasses
~food coloring
~boiling water
~lab sheet to record data

Procedure:
~pour boiling water into one of the glasses about half full
~pour cold water (tap) into the other jar about half full
~ drop 1 drop of food coloring into each
~observe and record information

supplies

adding the food coloring

I think it would be hard to mess up this experiment but if all went well, the food coloring added to the hot water mixed more rapidly than that of the cold water.  Eventually, the food coloring will completely mix together in the cold water but the point was to show that when a substance is hot, the atoms move more rapidly.

Happy homeschooling!
