Pre-K/pre-reading co-op classes

I had no idea that I would love teaching Pre-K as much as I do.  It has been a while since I taught my own kids how to read.  Kids do not all learn how to read at the same pace but in my opinion if you can teach a kid to read, you can teach anything!

Below are just various activities that we have been working on in my class.  I am using a "letter of the week" approach.

The kids I have are between 4 and 6.  They are all very sweet.  I have a few that need to go quickly from one activity to the next and a few that could happily work on the same activity until it is perfect.  This is the way I am teaching so far.  They eat a snack that is related to the letter we are working on while I read a book related to the letter.  For example, when we worked on "A," they had apple slices while I read Ants in Your Pants."  We talked about ants which spiraled into a big conversation.  They told stories of how many times they had been bitten by ants and how ants invaded their homes.  Then I had them name everything they could think of that starts with the letter A.  We also did an activity from their ABCs workbook.  After that, we worked on a few sight words that start with the letter "A" and then it was time to go.  The time went so fast!

Here are few samples of other things we have been working on.  I think this is pretty self-explanatory.

I will explain this one.  For the letter C, we cut carrots and used stamp pads to make designs.  This was really fun!

These are alphabet letters on Popsicle sticks.  You can do a lot with these.  So far, we used them at random to name the letters.  These are good for letter recognition.
You can also spell short words like below.

It is also nice to have my kiddos helping me get the activities ready.  I think A12 colored most of the letters above.  I will post a few links for Pre-K/pre-reading soon.

I am so happy to get to work with these kids.  They are now calling me the "funny teacher" and one mom emailed me to say her daughter had so much fun, she asks every day when Monday will happen again so she can come to my class.  Too sweet!
