Italy, Part 3

Okay so now you have figured out that I am totally biased towards Italy.  I just can't help it!

~Italian volcanoes.
Mount Vesuvius

~Mount Vesuvius is a composite or stratovolcano which is just a fancy way of saying that the volcano erupts in two ways. The lava flows over the sides as it blows rocks into the air.
~1944 was the last time Mt. Vesuvius erupted.  This eruption destroyed many neighboring villages and the entire city of Pompeii.

Pompeii
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near Naples and was mostly destroyed due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

There are two other active volcanoes in Italy; they are Etna and Stromboli.  Mount Etna is the largest volcano in Italy and according to Greek mythology, Zeus trapped a deadly monster named Typhoon under this mountain.  I have to be careful here because Greek mythology is another topic we love in this house so I will try to just focus on Italy and the volcanoes even though it will be difficult.

Mount Stromboli, sounds like something on the menu in an Italian restaurant but this Stromboli is not edible.  Mount Stromboli has continuously erupted for the last 2,000 years.  The activity from Stromboli is almost always explosive in nature.  This volcano carries the nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean" because of its constant visible activity from minor eruptions.
Mount Stromboli is located near Sicily.

Sicily
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.  Sicily dates back to 8000 BC as recorded first human dwellings on the island amd was settled by various Greek tribes.  The capital is Palermo.  The natives speak Italian and Sicilian and is home to just under 2 million people.

Is there a better lead into the Sicilian Mafia than a little info about Sicily?

Sicilian Mafia
Cosa Nostra (mafia) in English means "our concern."  The mafia originates in Sicily, Italy and is "loosely" associated with crime.  Believe it or not, even some criminals have structured codes of conduct.  Groups known as the "family" or the "clan" claim sovereignty over a territory

Lucky for this study, current events straight from Palermo, Sicily, the fugitive mafia boss was tracked down by police on December 13, 2013.  Click here to learn more.  Matteo Messina Denaro current mafia boss and a few others are arrested.

And lastly, The Vatican City.  The Vatican is a separate sovereign nation.   The Vatican City is landlocked territory of around 109 acres walled inside the city of Rome.  There are approximately 840 people who live within the Vatican City State.  It was founded in 1929.  The Vatican has its own president and currently that title goes to Guiseppe Bertello, and the government systems honored are elective monarchy, absolute monarchy, Theocracy.  The Vatican is its own country.  This is one of the most important places in the world and is guarded by the Swiss Army guards.

Current news-The Vatican recently light its Christmas tree in St. Peter's Square.  This has been a tradition since 1980 thanks to Pope John Paul II.
