What's that smell?

As an infant, Helen Keller had Scarlet Fever.  By the age of 2, she had lost 2 very important senses.   She could not see or hear.  Imagine being trapped in a dark, silent world so young.  Because of her loss of sight and inability to hear, she was said to have an amazing sense of smell.

We took this opportunity to review all 5 senses with a heavier emphasis on the sense of smell.  I conducted a little experiment to find out how well C11 and A10 could smell.

This was nothing elaborate.  I decided to use scented essential oils.  I placed a few drops of the essential oils in small medicine dosage cups, and they had to guess what the smells were.  The scents were coconut, vanilla, peppermint, lemon, orange, and eucalyptus.

I used about 5 drops of each essential oil in the dosing cups.  Essential oils are very fragrant so you really do not need too much.
I labeled each cup with a number and wrote down which scent was in which dosing cup.
This is a chart that I made up so they could write down what they thought each scent was.
It turns out that C11 and A10 have a good sense of smelling.  Eucalyptus was the one that neither of them could guess but the rest gave them no problem.

This was a lot of fun and very simple to do.
