acids and bases

Testing for acids and bases.  We had a lot of fun with this experiment, and it was so easy to do and understand the concept of acids and bases.

Things we tested.  A dinner roll, an apple slice, an orange, a purple potato, a red potato, milk of magnesia, lemon juice, and lemon juice with milk of magnesia mixed in.

These are litmus paper test strips.  When acid is detected, the strip will turn blue.

Milk of magnesia is a base that neutralizes acids in your stomach.

The results.  I made up a homemade chart to record the results.  The oranges, apples, and lemon juice tested highly acidic while the potatoes tested mildly acidic.   The dinner roll,  milk of magnesia, and the lemon juice with the milk of magnesia in it did not test positively meaning, they are all bases.
After we did our initial testing, my kids were going around the house testing random other items for acidity.  Fun!
