Chemical reactions with Apologia General Science

Alchemist tried to change inexpensive substances (like lead) into gold or some other precious substance.  I wish I could make gold!

A chemical reaction is one or more substances interacting together to form one or more new substances.

Supplies

Using a funnel, place the baking soda inside of the balloon.

White vinegar.

Place the balloon opening around the opening of the bottle and hold up the bottom of the balloon so that the baking soda will fall into the bottle with the vinegar.

When the baking soda mixed with the vinegar, the substances interacted.  The result was the forming of 3 new substances:  carbon dioxide, sodium acetate, and water.   The carbon dioxide (a gas) bubbled and entered the balloon causing it to fill with air.

We are loving these simplistic experiments in Apologia General Science.  Easy to do and easy to understand without spending a lot of money or time tracking down science supplies.
