Moving on to chapter 2 of Homer Price.
In this chapter, Homer and his friend Freddy like to look at comic books. His friend Freddy is especially fascinated by Super-Duper comic books and believes that Super-Duper really has super powers. Homer tries to reason with him but Freddy insists that Super-Duper is the real deal! Freddy calls Homer with exciting news, there will be a new Super-Duper film premiering and Super-Duper will be there in person. Freddy is beaming with excitement so they make a plan to go to see the premier on the following Saturday.
Freddy and his little brother Louis came to pick up Homer in a wagon pulled by Lucy. As you can guess Lucy is a horse. Lucy pulls the wagon all the way to Centerburg and as they pull up, they see Super-Duper's shiny, red car parked outside of the movie theater. Homer and his friends are very impressed by this car.
After the movie was over, the boys head back home. As they are rounding a corner, they hear honking followed by a loud CRASH! Super-Duper has crashed into a fence. The boys were very excited by this and thought that they would see Super-Duper in action but this was not the case. What they did hear was a loud "Ouch" from Super-Duper. With the help of Lucy, they get Super-Duper's car back onto the road. The boys are really disappointed, especially Freddy.
We also watched The Case of the Cosmic Comic on you tube.
Part 1
Part 2
Other lessons we worked on were:
*dealing with disillusionment (Homer and Freddy are disappointed by Super-Duper)
*horsepower (what it really means)
*Chromium (Super-Duper has a red car with shiny chromium trimmings)
*periodic table (since we were learning about chromium, I added some review on the periodic table)
Some of the resources we used for the periodic table.
*cartooning (we worked on cartooning since comic strips were a major topic in the story) How to draw a cartoon. An online comic creator. Printable cartoon panels.
Fun cartoon resources we used.
*melodrama (predictable plot that always includes a hero, a villain, and a damsel in distress who loves the hero but is always held hostage by the villain)
That will do it for chapter 2.
