Oglethorpe University.........

How could anyone not want to go here?

Besides the valuable academics OU offers, it looks like a Gothic castle, has a Crypt of Civilization, a museum of art, is on the national registry for historic places, and wait for it, there is a haunted theater!  What???

And if those reasons are not good enough, OU is also a popular location for filming movies, television shows, music videos, and commercials, which just happens to include one of our favorites, The Vampire Diaries.

OU is a private liberal arts college located in Brookhaven in Atlanta. If you are lucky enough to be accepted to OU, you will pay, on average, $34,000 a year and add on another $12,000 for room and board and considerably more if you are not a resident of Georgia.  But it is a phenomenal college.

Find out more about OU here.

OU also offers a study abroad program including Rome, Barcelona, Athens, and Cape Town.

A little background info.

~Founded  in 1835 and named for James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia Colony.

~The University had to close down during the Civil War in 1862.

~They reopened their doors in 1870 but that was short-lived.

~Oglethorpe had to close again just two years later but in 1913 thanks to Dr. Jacob Thornwell,
Oglethorpe was rechartered and additional buildings were added to accommodate their expanding educational offerings.

~Dr. Jacob Thronwell was president of OU for three decades.

A few famous people who went to Oglethorpe include Luke Appling, major league baseball player/elected to the hall of fame, Teal Sherer, actress, Joseph Mackey Brown, 59th governor of GA,   Sidney Clopton Lanier, poet, musician, writer, and Vincent Sherman, director/actor.  You can find out additional famous folks from OU here.

~As I mentioned, OU has a crypt of civilization on campus.

~The crypt was constructed between 1937 and 1940 and was actually once a swimming pool measuring 20 x 10 x 10 feet.

~The crypt is set to open in the year 8113 A.D.

~The time capsule is intended for any future inhabitants of Earth.

~You can find the crypt in the basement of Phoebe Hearst Hall at the OU campus in Georgia.

~The contents of the crypt is very random with a wide variety of items including one container of beer, Vaseline, voice recordings of Stalin and Hitler, a copy of the Bible, a copy of Dante's Inferno, an original copy of the Gone With the Wind script, aluminum foil, a radio, mannequins, and Lincoln logs.

You can find the full list of items buried here.

into place on May 28, 1940.

I think OU is a great place to go to college especially if you are from Georgia as it is rich in Georgia history and tradition.
